New lightweight concept for pedestrian and bicycle bridges [2024-05-08] In collaboration with research and industry partners, Borga has developed a new concept for constructing pedestrian and bicycle bridges (GC-bridges) that merges sustainability with cost-effectiveness. Supported by Vinnova within the Strategic Innovation Program “Lighter”, the project introduces a method for constructing GC-bridges using stainless steel. By leveraging trapezoidally profiled bridge beams combined with laser-welded bridge decking in a sandwich construction, the concept aims to reduce material usage while maintaining durability and strength. This initiative represents a move towards more sustainable construction methods, focusing on life cycle costs and environmental impact. Preliminary evaluation indicates that the new bridge concept could offer cost savings over time, while remaining within the budget of traditional GC-bridge constructions. Summary: Innovative Use of Materials: Trapezoidally profiled bridge beams and laser-welded bridge decking in stainless steel. Economically Sustainable: Potential for cost savings over the bridges’ life cycle. Environmental Focus: Reduced environmental impact through efficient use of materials and modern manufacturing techniques. Collaboration-Driven Innovation: A result of collaboration between research institutions and industrial companies. Image: Rundquist
